News of The Old Ceylon Comrades

The OLD CEYLON COMRADES are now looking for all Royal Air Force personnel who spent part of their service life on the island of Ceylon to join their group. If you are one such person, please contact us at info@ceyloncomrades.co.uk for further information.

In September 2007, a group of Old Ceylon Comrades were transported back 50 years on a trip to the beautiful island of Sri Lanka, or as they knew it Ceylon. For me it was an almost spiritual experience of 'going home' as I hadn't been back to the island since I was born there a long time ago.
The highlight of the trip has to be the visit to SLAF Katunyake, or as the Old Comrades knew it RAF Negombo. As soon as we all arrived on the camp we were treated like royalty. It was a privilege to be able to the camp through the eyes of several 'seventy-year-olds' acting as though they were twenty again. I will never forget the faces of the Old Comrades as they recounted their memories, especially around the Guardroom, the swimming pool and billet 217. Some of them were quiet, just remembering, whilst others were talking nineteen to the dozen about the nights when they lost control of their feet and senses after an evening in the Club before making their way back to their billet by way of a 'trip' down one of the monsoon drains, then fondly remembering where they left their bike. One even mentioned a palm tree that he fell in love with as he missed his true love back in England. I don't think he could find his palm tree as it had obviously also grown up.
I, for one, will never forget the early morning walks along the beautiful Indian Ocean, and meeting all the smiling faces of the friendly Sri Lankan people. Not all of them were offering to sell me silks or show me Negombo in a Tut Tut. Thank you 'boys' for letting me join you on your visit down memory lane. I will never look into your faces again and see 'Old Codgers' again. ............ Well maybe not! ............................................... a note by Colette Jones

A larger group returned to Negombo in September 2009, and again were treated to the hospitally that only Sri Lanka can offer. Thank you to all who made our two week stay on the island yet another on to remember.

The OLD CEYLON COMRADES are trying to gather information on the R.A.F. Police Auxiliaries who   worked along side us on stations all over the island. If you   were one of the Police Auxiliaries, know of anyone, or have photos, please contact us on info@ceyloncomrades.co.uk

Do you know someone that was in the R.A.F. Police on the island of Ceylon, and have lost contact?  They may be a member on our 150 strong list. Just contact us on info@ceyloncomrades.co.uk and we will try and put you back in contact.
